What will teaching in the 21st century be like??

In the Mr. Dancealot video, the central message is that students need to experience and practice what they have learned to fully understand. Mr. Dancealot would not let the class practice the whole semester. Whenever he would demonstrate the Foxtrot, Waltz, Swing, and Tango, he would stand behind the desk and the class could not even see what he was doing to understand. The author makes his conclusion by showing that even though they attended class and took notes, they still did not know any of the steps for the final because he did not let them practice what he preached. I agree with this conclusion. As a dance teacher, I know I cannot show my kids something one time and expect them to do it whenever I turn the music on; I have to go over it a few times and see if anyone has any questions. Everyone cannot learn dance steps just by looking at power points about it, it has to be a physical learning environment for dance moves.

Roberts thinks to teach in the 21st century means that everything will be electronic. He is saying that if we can only provide certain details, then our job as teachers is obsolete.
Students can get information from anywhere (i.e. Blogs, Facebook, Cell Phones, Twitter, Wikipedia, YouTube, iPods, and Google.)
Teachers are no longer the main source of knowledge, we are the filter. We can ask the internet ANYTHING.
With all of this information available, should our curriculum be focused on facts and content or skills?? If we asked them certain questions that they had to research, they would have to remember, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate, and create an answer.
Students learn professionalism from their teachers.
We need to rethink the tools we use and the types of problems we ask the students to solve. With technology and the internet with it's limitless resources: we can gather and discuss data, talk about reliable resources, publish and evaluate work, collaborate, struggling students can benefit from the internet, and students can create an e-portfolio and reflect on their work.
Today, using laptops, cell phones, and iPods provide temptation but they are not the source of negative behavior.
The students do not need to be entertained by these tools, they need to be engaged. Entertainment is NOT the same as engagement.
Entertainment is passive, it is for enjoyment, it is short-lived, it doesn't require relevance, it allows an escape from problems, and it is using the creativity of others. While engagement is active, it is for learning, it has long- term results, it is meaningful and applicable, it is for solving problems, and it is using the creativity of the participant.
It starts with us, the teachers. We need to remember the big picture.
I completely agree with the way Roberts sees teaching because this is how it will be in a couple of years and some people don't realize that. Kids need something to get them more interested in learning, and i think using technology will definitely help that. If Roberts is correct, I don't think it will affect me as an educator at all. I am very technology literate and i think it would be fun to integrate technology into teaching. I do; however, think that if Roberts is right then it will be hard for the older generation of teachers to learn everything about technology because some older teachers do not like technology, some barely know how to use a computer or smart phone. They will have to re- learn everything over again just like they are back in college.

In the network student video, my reaction is i agree with what he was explaining. Just like in the Roberts video, we will be the students filter for education, not their main source of information. The teacher is there to guide the student through everything he needs help with. She will help him with his grammar or punctuation when writing on his blog or writing to other people. She shows him how to tell what is good information on the internet and what is not. She keeps him organized, and she wants to help him succeed in his future career. Teachers are there to give you professionalism and that is a FACT.

The thesis of Vicki Davis's video is that you cannot teach a class and just have pencil and paper, because only some students will succeed. She wants to make her students comfortable with any type of technology. My reaction is that she is a brave teacher for not knowing how to use the program, and letting the children teach her. I like how she wants her students to engage with other people all over the world. I also liked how she encourages other teachers to do what she is doing.

Flipping a classroom is new to me, but I think it is a very effective idea for future teaching. Although I think it is a great idea, I don't necessarily agree with it 100%. In Mobile County Public School Systems, some of the children who attend do not come from homes with a computer at their fingertips. Like she said, if they do not have a computer to watch the assignment on, the students can watch it on the computers/ iPads provided at the school; this would not work in Mobile County. The students would all come in the next morning and need to watch it because they don't have a computer at home and I think that would take up more time by letting all of them watch it, rather than her just teach the lesson in class. Also, the schools do not have adequate computers or enough computers to provide for the students at school. This may need to be Mobile County's next investment. I do like the idea of flipping a classroom though, maybe in Baldwin County where the schools provide each and every student their own computer to take home.

What About EDM 310? (BP#1)

Some of the things that I have heard about EDM 310 frightened me. When I first transferred to University of South Alabama, I signed up for this class and my advisor MADE me drop the class because I would be too overwhelmed. He told me that this was a very "Time Consuming" class and that I better be ready to BRING IT whenever I got in this class. I asked around last semester if this class was as hard as they say it is, some told me yes and some told me no. One of my close friends said that it wasn't hard as long as you did your work on time, she passed this class with an A.

My fears about EDM 310 is that I won't get my work done on time or that I will make a bad grade. I have never been good with using my time wisely, and I've never been motivated enough to study and work hard in my classes. I am making a point this semester to make all A's since I am now in Tier 1 of my Education Program. I do not want any bad grades! Compared to all of my other classes I have taken in college so far, this is definitely the one that pushes you and makes you realize what you are capable of doing. I am determined to pass. Other classes I have taken are very slow pace and they take baby steps through all of the lessons, not in Dr. Strange's class, he just through us right in and kept on moving even if we didn't have any idea what he was talking about. I like to be challenged though, so I like this class.

Failure is not an option
I think the most difficult thing for me in EDM 310 is the same thing I previously stated, my fear. I am just now learning how to manage my time a little bit better. It gets better as each day passes I think. The best way for me to address this "most difficult" aspect of EDM310 is to never lose my determination and drive that I have just recently gained. I actually don't think I have any questions about this class so far, I am just along for the ride and ready to take on any challenge that gets thrown at me. If I did have any questions about EDM 310, I would e-mail Dr. Strange or go to the lab meetings located in the computer lab and get one of the teachers assistants to answer my questions I had.

Practice Blog Post

My name is Lauren Reid and I am 20 years old, about to turn 21 on May 26th. I was born in Mobile, Alabama and I have never moved anywhere else. I live in Semmes, which is right on the outside of Mobile. When I graduated from high school in 2011, I went straight to college at Faulkner State Community College to complete my basics. After almost completing my basics, I decided that it was time to come to South Alabama to finish my degree. I'm going to school for Elementary Education and I plan on getting my doctrine so that I can teach Elementary Education courses in college. My old art teacher at South Alabama, Ms. Vitulli, inspired me to do that. I have one older sister who is engaged and no other siblings. I am her maid of honor and I have been wedding planning like crazy. I absolutely love it, I cant wait to plan my own wedding one day.

My interests are teaching school, teaching dance, Astrophysics, tennis, painting and drawing. After I get my doctrine in teaching, I plan on going back to school for Astrophysics. I have always been fascinated by outer space and I would love to work at NASA and explore new worlds every day of my life. My dream is to go to the International Space Station. I absolutely love doing anything that involves me interacting with kids, I teach kids dance almost every day of my life and I absolutely love it. I played tennis in high school and I thought it was so much fun, I plan on trying out for the tennis team at South Alabama next year if they could somehow work around my schedule. My room is filled with my paintings and drawings, it is definitely my passion. Even though I don't have a lot of time to paint and draw anymore, I love when I get the chance to.

I want to enter the field of education because I think it is what I'm meant to do. Sometimes I get this feeling that I am going to make a huge difference in schools whenever I become a teacher. When I first started college 3 years ago, I wanted to be a Nurse so bad. I decided to take a class at SAAD healthcare and get certified to be a nursing assistant because that's what you do in the clinical part of nursing school. After sitting through class for a week, they had to send us into a nursing home so that we could do our clinical. I have NEVER been so grossed out in my entire life. I ended up coming home my first day after that and telling my parents that I wanted to change my major. I worked at a daycare for 5 years and just recently quit, and that was the most fun, most exciting job I've ever had in my life. I am still a kid at heart and I loved going to work every day so I knew I would be a good teacher when I decided to change my major to teaching.

Ballerina

Dancing is a feeling like no other. If you have never put your heart and soul into a dance, then you have no idea what I'm talking about. You can take out any kind of feelings on a dance if you just feel and listen to the music. That it why I am so passionate about dance and I would love to continue to teach dance for the rest of my life.

Something interesting about me is that I helped my sister open up our own dance schools, we now have 3 locations in Alabama. Our main dance school is in Citronelle, one is in Bay Minette, and one is in Atmore on the Poarch Creek Indian Reservation. I am so blessed to have made a difference in over 300 kid's life's with dance. Some kids come to dance and are so eager to learn and to better themselves and that's what makes me happy because I want my dancers to be on TV one day or dancing on Broadway. The older kids will always tell me how much I inspire them to be better dancers. I love my job and I hope that I will never quit.

My Test Post Title

This is my first post. I clicked the HTML button which I should always do in EDM310. I am now a blogger!
